(liraglutide) injection
Daily injection
Helps you feel full faster, longer
Lose 9% of your body weight on average in 1 year
Health Canada approved for weight loss
Saxenda is a brand-name version of the generic medication liraglutide. Saxenda is Health Canada approved and clinically proven to help with weight loss and belongs to a group of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. These drugs limit your appetite by acting like a hormone that slows down your gut, making you feel less hungry. People on Saxenda lost an average of 9% of their body weight after one year.
Saxenda works for weight loss by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which reduces appetite and slows down the movement of food through your stomach. This may make you feel full longer and therefore eat less, which can lead to weight loss. When paired with healthy food choices and regular exercise, Saxenda can assist you in reaching and maintaining your long-term weight goals.
We will work with you to determine if your insurance provider provides coverage for your GLP-1 medication, which is paid for separately from our weight loss program. If your insurance provider provides coverage, our Insurance Concierge Team will work with you and your insurance provider to provide the necessary documentation. If coverage is denied, we'll help you understand your options, including paying cash.
Selecting a GLP-1 that’s right for you depends on a few factors, including your health history and insurance coverage (if you’re using insurance).
If you qualify for our weight loss program, our team will help determine which GLP-1 is the best fit for you.
Saxenda is a clear liquid that comes in prefilled injection pens. Each pen contains multiple doses. If prescribed, you (or someone in your household) will administer the injection once daily under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or arm. You’ll also receive clear instructions on using the injection pen, and your Medical Weight Loss Team can offer additional advice.
Your Medical Weight Loss team will walk you through the side effects patients report most often:
Nausea
Vomiting
Upset stomach
Stomach pains
Constipation
Diarrhea

Who Is Eligible?

Side Effects
Serious side effects may happen in people who take Saxenda®, including:Possible thyroid tumors, including cancer. Tell your health care professional if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. These may be symptoms of thyroid cancer. In studies with rats and mice, Saxenda® and medicines that work like Saxenda® caused thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer. It is not known if Saxenda® will cause thyroid tumors or a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in people.
Do not use Saxenda® if you or any of your family have ever had MTC, or if you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
The time it takes for Saxenda® to work varies from person to person. You start with a low dose and gradually increase it to minimize side effects. Some people may notice benefits immediately, while others may not see results until they reach a higher dose.People taking Saxenda often report reduced hunger and feeling full sooner, which can lead to eating less and weight loss. It may also help improve cravings for certain foods. Saxenda should be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and regular physical activity.
No, you cannot take Saxenda® and Wegovy® together. Both medications are Health Canada-approved for weight loss and belong to the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist family. They mimic the GLP-1 hormone, which naturally decreases appetite and cravings. Since Wegovy and Saxenda act similarly in the body, using them together is not recommended due to unknown safety. Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea, and taking both drugs together may increase the risk of serious side effects. To determine whether Wegovy or Saxenda is right for you, consult your doctor.
To switch from Saxenda® to Wegovy®, you will need to transition from a daily injection (Saxenda) to a weekly one (Wegovy). This transition should be done under careful supervision by your doctor to prevent adverse effects. Your doctor can help determine the appropriate starting dose of Wegovy, which may be higher than the initial 0.25 mg dose, depending on your current Saxenda® dose. Your prescribing medical provider will give specific recommendations on how to make the switch. There are various reasons why you might consider transitioning from Saxenda to Wegovy, so it is important to discuss your options with your medical provider.
The cost of Saxenda is typically around $450 CAD + HST per 1 to 1.5 months. However, please note that prices may vary based on factors such as the pharmacy, dosage, and other factors.
Yes, you administer the Saxenda® injection yourself! Saxenda® comes in an easy-to-use pen that you can use at home. After preparing your injection site, take your Saxenda pen out of the fridge and attach a very small needle to it (a separate prescription is required for the needles). Turn the dial to your dose, then press the needle into the skin on your abdomen, upper arm, or upper leg. The pen dial will turn to zero and click. Hold for 6 seconds before pulling the pen away from your skin. Remove the needle from the pen and dispose of it properly. A new needle is needed for each injection.
