(semaglutide) injection
Weekly injection
Helps you feel full faster, longer
Lose 15% of your body weight on average in 1 year
Health Canada approved for weight loss
Wegovy is a brand-name version of the generic medication semaglutide, which is a type of medication called a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist. Instead of that tongue-twister of a name, we call these medications “GLP-1s” for short.
Wegovy is Health Canada approved and clinically proven to help with weight loss. How? It acts like a natural hormone your body uses to regulate blood sugar and appetite—key steps in resetting your biological set point to help you maintain a new, lower weight. In fact, the STEP 4 clinical trial saw people who combined Wegovy with lifestyle changes lose an average of 10.6% of their body weight after 20 weeks, and 17% after 68 weeks.
Wegovy works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which slows digestion and helps your brain regulate appetite by reducing hunger sensations. As your digestion slows, you may feel full longer and therefore eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
We will work with you to determine if your insurance provider provides coverage for your GLP-1 medication, which is paid for separately from our weight loss program. If your insurance provider provides coverage, our Insurance Concierge Team will work with you and your insurance provider to provide the necessary documentation. If coverage is denied, we'll help you understand your options, including paying cash.
Selecting a GLP-1 that’s right for you depends on a few factors, including your health history and insurance coverage (if you’re using insurance).
If you qualify for our weight loss program, our team will help determine which GLP-1 is the best fit for you.
You'll inject the medication underneath the skin using an injection pen (a tiny needle - like a pinprick). You should inject into abdominal fat, thigh, or upper arm - ideally, you should rotate between these locations.
This is a painless and quick process, and we'll guide you through how to do this! Regardless of the dose, you'll only inject Wegovy once per week.
Injections should be administered on the same day each week. These can be done at any time of day, with or without food.
Your Medical Weight Loss team will walk you through the side effects patients report most often:
Nausea
Vomiting
Upset stomach
Stomach pains
Constipation
Diarrhea

Wegovy is Health Canada approved for weight loss. Wegovy may have serious side effects, including possible thyroid tumors. Do not use if you or your family have a history of a type of thyroid cancer called MTC or MEN 2.
What is Wegovy?
Wegovy is a brand-name version of the generic medication semaglutide, which is a type of medication called a glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonist. Instead of that tongue-twister of a name, we call these medications “GLP-1s” for short. Wegovy is Health Canada approved and clinically proven to help with weight loss. How? It acts like a natural hormone your body uses to regulate blood sugar and appetite—key steps in resetting your biological set point to help you maintain a new, lower weight. In fact, in the pivotal clinical trial people who combined Wegovy with lifestyle changes lost an average of 9% of their body weight after 20 weeks, and 14.9% after 68 weeks.
How Does Wegovy Work?
Wegovy works by mimicking the hormone GLP-1, which slows digestion and helps your brain regulate appetite by reducing hunger sensations. As your digestion slows, you may feel full longer and therefore eat less, which can lead to weight loss.
How Do You Take Wegovy?
Wegovy comes in a prefilled injection pen. If prescribed, you (or someone in your household) will administer the injection under the skin of your stomach, thigh, or arm once a week. While a routine injection may sound intimidating, the Wegovy pen uses a tiny needle designed to minimize discomfort. You’ll also receive clear instructions on using the injection pen, and your Medical Weight Loss Team can offer additional advice.
How Quickly Do People Lose Weight with Wegovy?
In the STEP 4 clinical trial, people who combined Wegovy with a healthy diet and exercise lost an average of over 4% of their body weight by eight weeks. Those who reached a steady dose of 2.4 mg per week lost an average of 10.6% of their body weight in the first 20 weeks of treatment—and over 17% of their body weight within 68 weeks. Everyone responds to Wegovy differently, and if prescribed, your Medical Weight Loss Team will work with you to get the best results for you.
Side Effects
Wegovy® may cause serious side effects, including:
Possible thyroid tumors, including cancer. Tell your healthcare provider if you get a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath. These may be symptoms of thyroid cancer. In studies with rodents, Wegovy® and medicines that work like Wegovy® caused thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer. It is not known if Wegovy® will cause thyroid tumors or a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in people
Do not use Wegovy® if you or any of your family have ever had a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or if you have an endocrine system condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
The cost of Wegovy is typically around $460 CAD + HST per month. However, please note that prices may vary based on factors such as the pharmacy, dosage, and other factors.
The amount of weight lost per week on Wegovy® varies for each patient. Wegovy is used alongside lifestyle changes, such as a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, to promote weight loss. In studies, people lost an average of about 6% of their starting weight by 12 weeks, about 10% by 20 weeks, and about 15% by one year (a little more than 0.5 lb per week). When starting Wegovy, patients begin at the lowest dose (0.25 mg weekly) and gradually increase every four weeks to a maximum dose of 2.4 mg weekly, as long as the medication is well tolerated. For some patients, weight loss may not start until they reach a higher dose.
Like all medications, Wegovy can cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Most patients find that these side effects resolve over time as their body adjusts to the medication. If your side effects persist, please speak with one of our clinicians for advice. Further information can be found on our Wegovy safety information page or refer to the Patient Information Leaflet that comes with the medication.
Wegovy is a once-weekly injectable medication. You don't need to administer it at a specific time of day, but it should be the same day each week and roughly the same time. Wegovy can be taken with or without food. If needed, you can change the day of the week you take Wegovy, as long as your last dose was at least 3 days ago.
Wegovy and Ozempic both contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but they are marketed for different conditions. Ozempic, available since 2017, is used to treat type 2 diabetes, while Wegovy is a newer brand approved for weight loss. Both medications work the same way and produce the same response in the body. The main differences are the dosage of semaglutide and the conditions they are intended to treat.
