What are the benefits of hormone optimization treatment?

According to the latest guidelines from The North American Menopause Society (NAMS), hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment for relieving menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and recurrent urinary tract infections. Clinically, HRT has also been shown to effectively alleviate insomnia, mood changes, and brain fog.

Recent research indicates that women who start HRT within 10 years of their last period experience a significant reduction in menopausal symptoms and a lower risk of heart disease and bone loss.

Is HRT covered by insurance?

Insurance coverage for HRT depends on your provider and the type of hormone therapy prescribed. However, insurance is more likely to cover the full or partial cost of Health Canada approved bioidentical hormones (the type prescribed by us) compared to compounded preparations, which are not regulated.

Generally, insurance covers generic Health Canada approved bioidentical hormones. In many cases, it will also cover part of the cost of brand-name HRT if necessary or recommended by a clinician. Our care coordinators can guide you in obtaining insurance coverage for HRT as part of your holistic plan.

I heard that hormone replacement therapy isn’t safe—is that true?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) faced significant backlash after a 2002 Women’s Health Initiative study linked it to an increased risk of breast cancer and heart disease. This caused widespread panic, and many doctors stopped prescribing HRT.

However, that study was conducted over 20 years ago, and our understanding of HRT has since evolved. Recent guidelines and research indicate that if women start HRT within 10 years of their last period, they experience a significant reduction in menopausal symptoms and a lower risk of heart disease and bone loss.

When should I start hormone replacement therapy?

Research shows that starting HRT within 10 years of your last period typically offers more benefits than risks. However, some women may benefit from starting earlier: you can begin hormone replacement therapy at the first sign of menopause symptoms, even if you're still in perimenopause and having periods.

For women who start HRT after the 10-year window, there is no significant effect on cardiovascular disease risk. This means you may not gain the heart-protective benefits of HRT, but it also likely won't increase your risk of heart problems.

How long can I safely be on HRT?

Doctors once believed that women should stop hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by age 65, but there's no scientific basis for this idea. Newer research and guidelines suggest that the duration of HRT should be a shared decision between the patient and their provider. Together, you and your clinician can consider your symptoms, health history, and quality of life on HRT to make the best decision.

Some patients choose to take HRT for the shortest time needed to alleviate their menopause symptoms. Others feel so great on HRT that they prefer to continue indefinitely. Both approaches can be valid options.

How can I tell if my HRT dose is right for me?

Your clinician will help you determine if you’re on the right dose and delivery method for your HRT. First, we’ll check for any breast tenderness or bleeding, which could indicate that your dose needs to be lowered. Then, we’ll assess whether you’re getting enough benefit from your current dose. If not, we can adjust your prescription until you experience the desired relief.

Can I take hormone replacement therapy after a hysterectomy?

Yes, women who have had a hysterectomy (uterus removal) don’t need progesterone to prevent uterine cancer, so they are prescribed estrogen-only HRT. Research shows that women under 60 who start estrogen-only HRT within 10 years of menopause have a reduced risk of breast cancer and other health benefits.
